Visit preview

A visit, step by step

Read it ahead, or go through it with the person who is coming with you.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Before you come

Call, or send a request. Tell us what makes a visit hard and what helps: the lamp, the noise, a hand near your face, not knowing what's next. We write it in your record so nobody asks twice.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Walking in

The door opens onto a quiet front room with the radio off. We check you in at the desk, and a quiet corner is there if you'd rather wait out of the main room.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The room

You see the chair, the light, the tray and the small tools before you sit. Nothing is switched on. You can talk with us in a regular chair first.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The first look

We say what we are about to do, show you the tool, and let you hold it if you'd like. Then we begin. A raised hand means stop, and we stop.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Sounds and sensations

The suction hisses, the polisher hums, the water is cool. We tell you which one comes next and how long it lasts.

  6. 06

    Step 6: Leaving

We tell you what we did and what comes next, in writing if you'd like. The next visit can be longer, shorter, or only a practice visit.

Come by before the first visit

Walk down the hall, look at the room and sit in the chair with nothing happening. Stay as long as you like and leave when you've had enough. A look-around is not a treatment visit.

  • Call to pick a quiet time

  • Bring whoever helps you most

  • Ask about anything you see

What you can bring or ask for

  • Things to bring

Headphones, sunglasses, a weighted blanket, a tablet, a toy, picture cards.

  • Things to ask for

The lamp off, a longer visit, a split visit, a caregiver in the room.

  • Things we'll say

What we're about to do, what you'll feel and how long it lasts.

  • Things you can say

Stop. Wait. Again. Not today. We'll take each one at its word.
