Children and teens

We see children from about age two, and teens, for exams, cleanings and basic repairs. Care for young patients here is provided by general dentists, not by a pediatric dentist, which is a separate recognized specialty. Many children first come just to look around.

What happens

A first visit can be short. The next visits build from it.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Look around

Come in, sit anywhere, touch the tools if you want to. Nothing is done.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Count and look

The dentist counts teeth with a mirror, with a caregiver beside the chair.

  3. 03

    Step 3: A short cleaning

If it's going well, we clean one part of the mouth. We stop when it's enough for the day.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Next steps

We tell the child and the caregiver what comes next, and write it down.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

Children set the pace. We show each tool, let them hold it, and use plain words. Headphones, a blanket, a toy or a tablet are all fine, and nitrous oxide is an option for some visits.

  • If you wait

Cavities in baby teeth can hurt and can spread, and the teeth hold space for the adult teeth. The dentist will tell you which teeth need care now and which can be watched.

  • Risks and after-care

A numb lip or cheek can be bitten without noticing; we tell the caregiver to watch for it. Call us if a child has swelling, a fever or pain that gets worse.

  • How it's billed

You get a written estimate before any treatment, and the fees page explains how plans and self-pay work. We check your child's benefits before the first visit.

Questions about children and teens

How old does my child need to be?

We see children from about age two. For a younger child, call and we'll talk it through.

Can I stay with my child?

Yes, for the whole visit. We'll also ask where you want to sit.

What if my child won't open their mouth?

That is common. We try again another day, or begin with a look-around visit. We never hold a child down.
